Day
1: 12 miles east of Auckland, and largest of the inner
islands, Waiheke Island is a good place to replenish supplies
and to dine ashore. Boutique vineyards beckon you to relax
and sample their wines. There are coves to explore and country
walks. The island boasts a range of local crafts, potting,
weaving, leatherwork and art. The anchorages on the southern
coastline of Waiheke and nearby Ponui Island and are refreshingly
fringed by sandy beaches and rolling farmlands.
Day 2: 12
miles further east across the Firth of Thames, lies the historic
Coromandel Coast and township, a memory of gold rush history
and a colorful past. Te Kouma Harbour is a large natural landlocked
harbour. Today, its steep, wild mountains and forests, and
its lovely coastline, are favoured by nature enthusiasts and
visiting yachtsmen.
Day 3: 50
miles north east of Auckland, Great Barrier Island guards
the outer extremities of the Hauraki Gulf. The 'Barrier' offers
some of the best diving and fishing in New Zealand. You could
easily spend a week here exploring the maze of inlets and
hidden deep-water harbours
Day 4: A
climb to the top of Mt Hobson for the energetic to enjoy the
panoramic vista over ivory beaches and beyond. Enjoy the outstanding
scenic bush walk and bird song. For those who prefer to relax,
enjoy bathing in a natural outdoor hot thermal spring. Back
on board enjoy superb local seafood for which the island is
renowned.
Day 5: Cruise
26 miles north of Auckland to Kawau Island and the spectacular
Bon Accord Harbour. Part of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park
it's east coast is rugged and inhospitable while the west
has sheltered coves and inlets making it a favorite stop over
for cruising yachtsmen. A different bay for breakfast, lunch
and dinner, it's also the perfect spot for fishing and sailing.
Ashore, visit the historic Mansion house and picnic in the
gardens with the peacocks. For the energetic take a brisk
stroll over the pine- forested ridges. There are walks to
